OFFICIAL: Celtic announce final signing of the transfer window
Celtic announced their final signing of the summer transfer window late on Tuesday night.
Brendan Rodgers’ side had made 10 signings but have now added Nigeria international striker Kelechi Iheanacho to their ranks on a one-year deal.
Iheanacho arrives at Celtic after a year at Sevilla, where he played 11 times and scored three goals before being moved on loan to Middlesbrough.
The Hoops had been pursuing Kasper Dolberg on Deadline Day but missed out on the striker due to a bizarre sequence of events that started with Liam Delap’s injury for Chelsea. This led to Marc Guiu being recalled from Sunderland, who in turn signed Brian Brobbey from Ajax, forcing the Amsterdam club back into the market for Dolberg.
Rodgers hailed when Iheanacho will give to his team.
In an official statement, he said: “I know Kelechi so well and what he can bring to the team. He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate.
“I am sure he will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings. He has great experience and he is right in his peak years so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”
Iheanacho arrival does not calm angry fans
Celtic’s transfer policy this summer has led to anger from fans, frustrated that the club were not more active in the market prior to their elimination from the Champions League.
In particular, the board has been slammed for their lack of ambition in the market, and it appears that the arrival of Iheanacho has done little to placate supporters who feel that an opportunity to take a significant step forward has been missed.
One fan responded to the announcement of Iheanacho’s signing on X: “Can someone please explain how we had no plan b at the football club IF Dolberg knocked us back? 48 hours ago we readied a bid of £8.5m + bonuses… you have lost all backing of the fans over the last 24 hours and rightly so. get that board out.”
Iheanacho has doubters to silence at Celtic, where he will join Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand as new centre-forwards on the Glasgow club’s books.
