Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers cast doubt over his long-term future at the Glasgow giants during the transfer window, raising the possibility of Ange Postecoglou returning to the club.

Eliminated from the Champions League at the first hurdle by Kairat Almaty, the Hoops have also made an uninspiring start to their Premiership defence, notably being held to a scoreless draw by Rangers prior to the international break.

Rodgers was left seething with the manner in which Celtic conducted their transfer business and publicly attacked the board.

It was a move reminiscent of his previous spell in Glasgow’s East End, which he infamously cut short to move to Leicester City in the Premier League.

A repeat of that saga looks increasingly likely, with the Northern Irishman linked to the Nottingham Forest job should Nuno Espirito Santo depart.

Postecoglou to make Celtic return?

If Rodgers were to leave Celtic, it would leave Ange Postecoglou as the overwhelming favourite to return to the club.

The Australian won praise for his brave brand of football while previously at Parkhead, while he also saw his stock rise by winning the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur. The London side elected to fire him after that triumph due to the club’s poor Premier League finish – a situation that he would argue was at least part caused by chronic injury problems.

If Postecoglou is to return to Glasgow, it may well be dependent on bigger clubs refusing to snap him up.

Bayer Leverkusen were linked with a possible move for him in the wake of the shock sacking of Erik ten Hag after just three competitive matches of the season. The former Manchester United manager lasted less than a month of the campaign with B04, but the Bundesliga giants have no intention of moving for Postecoglou, according to Kicker.

The former Celtic boss does not correspond to the profile of coach they are looking for. Leverkusen want a manager who will play a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their current favourite said to be a Spanish speaker.

Should Rodgers leave Celtic, then, the path remains open for Postecoglou to return in a series of events that would be warmly welcomed at Parkhead.
