Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that the club still plan on renewing Kylian Mbappe’s contract before the end of the season.

The French striker’s current deal with the Parisian club is set to expire next summer and is widely expected to move to Real Madrid next season.

In a recent interview, Mbappe revealed that he asked to leave PSG during the previous summer transfer window, before the club received and rejected a €180 million offer for the player from Real Madrid.

However, despite Mbappe’s public revelations, Madrid’s clear desire to sign the striker and an expiring contract, Leonardo remains hopeful of extending his contract.

"Our idea is to extend Kylian Mbappe’s contract. Nothing has changed in our plans,” said the PSG boss in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Kylian is a jewel, he is incredibly perfect for PSG... then we've Kylian, Leo [Messi, Neymar. We've never planned PSG's future without Mbappe".

Why does Mbappe want to leave PSG?

Like all players, Mbappe may have finally grown tired of winning the same trophies over and over again.

Since coming through at Monaco, the striker has won four Ligue 1 titles and three French Cup titles. And he may now wish to test himself in another league.

Despite reaching the final with PSG last season, the striker may also prefer to move to a club with a longer history attached to the Champions League and at Madrid the striker would be the leading figure at a club that is synonymous with the continental competition.

On a similar note, the young striker would also be Madrid's main star and would no longer need to share the limelight with other key players like Neymar and Lionel Messi.
