Enzo Fernandez edges closer to Chelsea exit as 'dream' transfer confirmed
Enzo Fernandez is open to leaving Chelsea this summer in order to complete a “dream” move to Real Madrid.
The Argentina international still has six years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, but reports of a blockbuster exit have intensified following the Blues’ 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16.
Fernandez fuelled rumours of a potential departure with his post-match comments after the second-leg and the 25-year-old has once again insisted that his long-term future at Chelsea isn’t guaranteed.
When asked if he is in contact with Real Madrid officials after arriving for international duty with Argentina, Fernandez told reporters: “There are no talks. Right now I'm focused on Chelsea, we'll see after the World Cup.”
However, he is yet to commit his future to Chelsea amid their current slump under new boss Liam Rosenior and multiple reports have confirmed that Fernandez could be set to depart west London following the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
Enzo Fernandez to leave Chelsea?
According to talkSPORT, Fernandez is open to joining Real Madrid this summer, with a Bernabeu switch regarded as a “dream” transfer by the former Benfica midfielder.
PSG and Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ittihad are also interested in signing the 25-year-old, although he reportedly favours a move to La Liga and has no intention of moving to Saudi Arabia at this stage in his career.
Chelsea, for what it’s worth, are desperate to retain Fernandez and he is yet to formally inform the club of his desire to leave. However, the midfielder was left disappointed by Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day and he is now “actively exploring options” ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
It’s reported that Fernandez wants to play Champions League football next season and his future at Chelsea could therefore be impacted by whether or not they are able to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition.
This report has been backed up by Spanish publication AS, who claim that contract extension talks between Chelsea and Fernandez have stalled.
It’s understood that negotiations over a new deal were initiated after Chelsea’s triumph at last summer’s Club World Cup, however an agreement failed to be reached and the two parties are yet to kickstart fresh talks.
Chelsea remain in a strong negotiating position as Fernandez’s current contract doesn’t expire until 2032, but the 25-year-old’s heart reportedly “belongs to Real Madrid.”
