France legend Antoine Griezmann reveals 'dream' transfer
Atletico Madrid legend Antoine Griezmann has reiterated his desire to play in Major League Soccer despite recently signing a contract extension.
The former France international, one of the best players of his generation, is still going strong at 34 years of age, although his influence at Atletico Madrid is waning.
While he has made 16 appearances so far this season, most have come off the bench. Out of an available 1,440 minutes, Griezmann has only played 671, scoring five goals.
In the summer, the attacker somewhat surprisingly extended his contract at Atletico Madrid until 2027. This came despite heavy links to MLS franchise LAFC, who ultimately ended up signing Tottenham legend Son Heung-min in a league-record €22 million deal instead.
What made his decision to extend in Spain's capital even more surprising is the fact that Griezmann has never made a secret of his desire to play stateside. A big fan of US sports, the veteran has repeatedly spoken favourably about MLS.
Griezmann: I still dream of playing in MLS
In a fresh interview with Spanish outlet AS, Griezmann has now once again reiterated that he still "dreams" of playing in MLS. “Everyone knows that my dream, my objective, is MLS, but I am still under contract. I want to continue.”
Griezmann says that he extended his Atleti contract because he "wants more." He is aiming to win silverware before departing, having not won a trophy at Atleti since the UEFA Super Cup in 2018.
His last taste of tangible success came in the 2021 Copa del Rey after his ultimately doomed €120 million move to Barcelona, where he played alongside Inter Miami megastar Lionel Messi.
"I want more. A LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey, the Champions League. I still have many minutes left to play, plenty of legs and mental strength to play and be someone important at the club.
"And I know I have to prove that to everyone, and I still want to be even more important. And then, as for the legendary status, we'll see many years from now."
