Fabrizio Romano makes Barcelona announcement: IMPORTANT deal agreed
Fabrizio Romano has announced a deal that Barcelona supporters have long waited for.
The football transfer news insider reports that the Catalan club is closing in on the extension for Frenkie de Jong’s contract. He will sign on fresh terms, keeping him at Camp Nou until 2029.
Romano’s update follows that of Sport, which claims that all parties have reached an agreement and that there will be an official announcement soon.
His current agreement with the Camp Nou side ends in June 2026, so Barcelona have faced a race against time to tie him down to a new agreement.
De Jong a long-standing problem for Barcelona
De Jong’s contract has long been a thorny issue for Barca. Previously, there was the treat of legal action against the player, who refused to negotiate a smaller wage or consider leaving the club during the worst of their financial issues.
Throughout this, the Netherlands international has, nevertheless, consistently remained a favourite of his coaches and has been named as the third captain for this season.
It therefore became doubly important for Barcelona to renew De Jong’s deal, and Romano reports that this issue is finally about to be resolved.
Reporting on X, he confirms: “Barcelona are closing in on the agreement with Frenkie de Jong over new deal until June 2029. Verbal agreement in place, final formal details being sorted then all signed with lawyers on it. New deal already approved on the club side.”
A delay in the agreement was caused by De Jong’s split with agent Ali Dursan, and for a period, the negotiations reached a near impasse. Despite this, both sides wanted the former Ajax man to remain at Barcelona.
“If you're a player with character, you don't want to stay just for the sake of being at Barcelona, but so you can win titles. He recognises that, and that's why he wants to stay. Within the club, we see him as a key player for the current project and for the coming years,” Barca sporting director Deco said.
De Jong is now ready to commit his future to Barcelona for the next three years, in a big win for both parties.
