Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League title over the weekend, but for a lot of their supporters, the focus is still on a man that wasn’t a European champions, Kylian Mbappe.

Last week, Kylian Mbappe signed a three-year contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain to remain at the club until 2025, putting an end to nearly a year of rumours of a potential move to Real Madrid.

There was plenty of confusion and anger after the decision, with the Spanish media questioning Mbappe’s ambition, while the French media believing they got one over Real Madrid.

Real Madrid fans were also adamant they would be signing the French forward earlier in the season, and showed their support for the player quite often.

How did things get so nasty between Real Madrid and Mbappe?

When PSG and Real Madrid squared off in the Champions League in the Round of 16 at the Santiago Bernabeu, the local fans chanted Mbappe’s name several times throughout the evening.

The decision to extend his PSG contract came as a bit of a shock, and the Real Madrid support have now changed their tone, even burning shirts of the player ahead of the Champions League final, held in Paris.

Following the success, there was even more abuse directed towards Mbappe during the team’s celebrations, as they sealed another Champions League title thanks to a Vinicius Jr. goal.

At the team’s parade through the streets of Madrid, there was chants of “Kylian Mbappé, son of a b***h,” which were audible on the live broadcast of the celebrations.

These chants were heard during captain Marcelo’s speech, and the Brazilian took a brief pause while speaking for matters to calm down.

The relations between the Madrid press and media and Mbappe have been frosty in the last week – Marca’s line was that Mbappe “lacked the class” to play for Real Madrid while El Chiringuito highlighted the Frenchman’s “cowardice”.

These matters certainly won’t be helpful should Real Madrid make a move for the 23-year-old in the coming years.
