‘DONE DEAL!’ – Gio Reyna’s new club confirmed
USMNT star Gio Reyna will complete a transfer worth a total of €7 million to kickstart his career away from Borussia Dortmund.
Reyna has scored only two goals in 49 appearances across the last two seasons, including a loan spell at Nottingham Forest in which he failed to take off.
He has been criticised for having a poor attitude and has seen his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) collapse from a career-high €50 million in November 2021 to just €7.8m.
Dortmund have decided to cut their losses on the 22-year-old, with Sky Sports Deutschland confirming that he is now set to join Bundesliga rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
Florian Plettenberg took to X to confirm: “Gio Reyna to Borussia Monchengladbach – done deal!
“Reyna has finally said yes. A full agreement has been reached.
“The total transfer fee is up to €7m - €3m guaranteed plus €4m in potential add-ons. Around €3m of those are considered realistic bonuses.
“Reyna will undergo his medical today.”
Previously, Reyna had been linked with a move to Serie A club Parma.
An inspired deal
The fact that Reyna, who had just a year left on his Dortmund deal, will be transferred for just a €3m initial fee highlights how far the player’s star has fallen in recent years.
In his extremely limited playing time for Dortmund last season, though, he posted some impressive numbers that show he could still be a force at the highest level.
Reyna was particularly impressive in terms of his xG (expected goals) and his chance creation passes, showing that he is more than capable of being a decisive player.
Monchengladbach will hope he can demonstrate this on a more regular basis. If he can, the US international could be one of the most inspired signings of the summer.
For an initial outlay of €3m, Reyna certainly appears a low-cost, low-risk signing who could have a devastating impact for his new side.
