Erling Haaland’s future lies away from Borussia Dortmund at one of Europe’s superpowers, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain among those to most covet the striker.

The Norway star should still have three months of competitive action in which to impress at Dortmund, but there are growing fears over his fitness levels.

Having picked up an issue earlier this year, his return to action has been unexpectedly delayed, throwing up the suggestion that he may never play for BVB again.

How long is Haaland out for?

Bild reports that Haaland’s comeback has been subject to a significant setback that will see him miss three Bundesliga matches in March. He will watch from the sidelines as Dortmund tackle Arminia, Mainz and Koln, while the prospect of him featuring against RB Leipzig on 2 April at present must be called into doubt.

However, there is not presently any indication that he will sit out the remainder of the season. Following the March international break, there are still Bundesliga fixtures remaining, including that match against Leipzig.

Just how important his presence in these games will be is questionable. Comfortably in second place, 10 points clear of fourth, BVB look guaranteed to secure a Champions League spot. Eight marks behind Bayern Munich, though, the league already appears to be out of reach. Meanwhile, they are already out of the DFB Pokal and Europe.

By the time Haaland is ready to make his return for Dortmund, they are likely to be playing out time in glamorised friendly matches.

The silver lining from the striker’s perspective is that he should have the next few weeks to map out his future – something that the club have already announced is likely to be decided, at least privately, imminently.

Dortmund can expect Haaland back before the end of the season, but just how meaningful the matches are and how committed the striker is will be doubtful.
