Chelsea broke a record during their 2-11 loss to Brighton on Saturday.

The Blues unwittingly smashed the record books with the most expensive substitute of all time.

When Frank Lampard took off four of his players against the southern coast side - Enzo Fernadez £107million, Wesley Fofana £70m, Christian Pulisic £57m, and Raheeem Sterling - it was the most expensive in history.

Football money expert Kieran Maguire made the claim on his Twitter account.

He wrote: “Chelsea have just made the most expensive substitution in world history taking off in a single change. Fernadez £107m, Fofana £70m, Pulisic £57m, Sterling £47.5m. Total £281.5m.”

The move didn’t amount to anything, however, Brighton earned three points against Lampard’s men on the day at Stamford Bridge.

Conor Gallagher opened the scoring for the Blues, but the Seagulls replied with Danny Welbeck and Julio Enciso finding the net.

Enrique want Blues job

It comes after reports suggested that Luis Enrique was ready to take charge of Chelsea earlier this month and was found to be disappointed by Todd Boehly's decision to hire Lampard on an interim basis.

The American sacked Graham Potter on April 2 after a string of poor displays and is now looking for someone to take him on full-time.

Boehly hired Lampard, the club legend, on a temporary basis. The 44-year-old returned to the Stamford Bridge dugout just over two years after being sacked by former owner Roman Abramovich.

The addition of Lampard appears to be owing to the fact that none of the main candidates was willing to take on the role halfway through the season - they wish to wait until the end of the season instead, with some still in roles at other clubs.

That is other than Enrique, AS report, who wanted to take the job straight away. The Spaniard has been out of work since leaving the role as the head coach of his national side.
