With Manchester City set to miss out on Marc Cucurella, they have turned their attention to Anderlecht full-back Sergio Gomez.

Oleskandr Zinchenko has left City for Arsenal, making Joao Cancelo the champions' only real option at left-back this season. Pep Guardiola wanted Marc Cucurella from Brighton, but with Chelsea pulling ahead in that pursuit, he could go for another fellow Spaniard in Gomez.

A Barcelona academy graduate - like Guardiola and Cucurella - Gomez shone for Anderlecht after joining from Borussia Dortmund, via a loan with Huesca, last season, and City could be about to acquire a player ready to light the touchpaper.

What position doe Gomez play in?

Gomez is primarily a left-back, and he started all but two of his Belgian Jupiler Pro League games with Anderlecht in the position last summer. He filled out once each at right-back and left midfield when injuries elsewhere demanded it.

However, Huesca used him across their midfield in La Liga in 2020/21, and at youth international level with Spain, Gomez is most often found in the final third, from where he has scored six goals in qualifying for next summer's UEFA Under-21 Euro.

How good is Gomez?

Too good for the Belgian league these days, it would appear. Anderlecht could only finish third last season, but Gomez plundered his six goals and 12 assists - from left-back - at a rate of one every 185 minutes he played. Only Joshua Zirkzee - the striker on loan from Bayern Munich - had a hand in more goals.

Gomez was only 17 when Dortmund plucked him from Barcelona, but he was never really given the chance to shine in Germany. Now blossoming into one of the most accomplished full-backs outside of Europe's five major leagues, Gomez looks ready to make them regret that fact.

What clubs are interested in Gomez?

Arsenal were linked with a move for Gomez earlier in the summer transfer window before signing Zinchenko, while former clubs Barcelona and Dortmund might both have welcomed him back had City not pulled into pole position for his signature.

They are now overwhelming favourites to secure it, too, with Gomez understood to be thrilled at the prospect of working with Guardiola at the Etihad.

When does Gomez's contract expire?

Sergio Gomez's current contract with Anderlecht expires on 30 June 2025.

How old is Gomez?

Sergio Gomez was born on 4 September 2000, making him 21 at the time of writing.

What is Gomez's Instagram?

Sergio Gomez's Instagram has 117k followers as of August 2022.
