Manchester United’s pursuit of Mason Mount has taken a fresh twist, after Chelsea turned down a £40m offer for the midfielder.

The England international, 24, continues to be strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford – although Liverpool are also said to maintain an interest.

Mount seems set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, and Man Utd still appear favourites to secure his signature – but they’re going to have to come back with a bigger offer.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, that’s exactly what United are planning to do – with their £40m bid potentially just one with which to test the waters.

Our in-house Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) model currently rates Mount at €68.9m (£58.9m) – which feels more in line with what Man Utd are likely to have to pay to get this deal over the line.

Chelsea may hold out for even more, though: the Blues are said to have put a £70m price tag on their academy product – who has made 195 appearances for his boyhood club, helping them win the Champions League two years ago.

At the end of the Blues’ thoroughly disappointing 2022/23, Mount cut an emotional figure, as if he was saying goodbye – and he told fans:

“It’s fair to say it’s been an up and down season, but your support has never dipped. Travelling around the country, you were with us every step of the way and, at times, we didn’t deserve you…”
