Argentine club unveil Falklands shirt design despite World Cup controversy

Argentine second-tier side Almirante Brown unveiled a new kit on Sunday featuring a political message asserting Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands during their victory over Racing de Cordoba.

The wording across the front of the jersey reads 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' ('The Malvinas are Argentinian'), using typography similar to the banner displayed by Argentina's players following their 2-1 World Cup semi-final win over England in Atlanta.

After the match, Almirante Brown shared a photograph of their starting line-up on X alongside the caption: "They are Argentinian!"

"Forever Argentinian! We're proud to present our tribute shirt to the Islas Malvinas, which will be worn for the first time in the match against Racing de Cordoba this Sunday," the club posted on Instagram ahead of Sunday's league game.

British people refer to the islands as the Falkland Islands, whereas Argentines call them the Islas Malvinas.

FIFA is currently investigating both the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several individuals following multiple incidents during the 2026 World Cup.

The investigation began after their 2-1 semi-final victory over England. FIFA's disciplinary rules prohibit using matches or tournament events for political demonstrations, and the governing body is examining whether the banner breached those regulations.

Separately, FIFA has opened individual disciplinary cases following the World Cup final defeat to Spain. Nahuel Molina is being investigated over two alleged assault offences and one alleged act of unsporting behaviour, Leandro Paredes faces three alleged assault charges, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala has been charged with one alleged assault. Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also under investigation for alleged unsporting behaviour.

No verdicts or sanctions have been announced yet. FIFA has confirmed that the AFA and all individuals involved will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations before its Disciplinary Committee reaches a final decision.
