The 21-year-old is recognised as one of the most promising talents in the Unites States and already has over 100 appearances under his belt for Philadelphia, while he has also broken into the USMNT senior squad after some impressive goalscoring exploits for the Under-20s.

The injury in question came during the Union's comprehensive 6-0 victory against D.C. United over the weekend's action.

Following a clash with Joao Peglow, Sullivan looked to be in major discomfort and was withdrawn in the 13th minute.

The player himself confirmed the severity of the injury via a social media post.

“Well… this is a message I hoped never to write. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL this past Saturday," he wrote on Instagram.

"I am gutted to not be able to finish this incredible season with the guys, but really proud to be a part of this team. I have full confidence that this special group will lift a trophy. Let’s win it @philaunion. Thank you all.”

This is a blow to Union's Supporters' Shield hopes as they currently sit top of the Eastern Conference.

Sullivan will now be out of action until next year and the race is on for the player to get back to full fitness before the 2026 World Cup which takes place partly in his home country of the United States.

Current USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino gave Sullivan his first cap for the senior side.

Sullivan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and started his career with local side Fishtown A.C before joining YSC Academy school under Philadelphia Union's banner.
