Too good for Man Utd – why Newcastle will demand record fee for world class Hall

Manchester United’s chances of signing Lewis Hall have all but flatlined in recent days after the Newcastle star agreed to sign a new contract and continue his rapid progression on Tyneside.

Hall had been United’s top target to succeed Luke Shaw at left-back during the summer but no formal move was ever made due to Newcastle being unwilling to consider the 22-year-old’s sale after losing a number of key stars in the window.

United opted against signing a left-back in the hopes that they could make a renewed approach for Hall next year but various reports have revealed that the defender is now set to pen a new contract that will keep him at the club he supports until 2031.

While there is still some hope at Old Trafford that Hall will still be open to a move even with his new deal, the England international has become one of Newcastle’s most important players under new boss Matthias Jaissle.

Hall has not missed a minute of action since Jaissle’s arrival and grabbed his second assist in two games during Newcastle’s 1-0 win at Millwall in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, with the youngster insisting he was thriving under his new manager after previous ‘negativity’.

"There was a lot of negativity before everything happened and as soon as the gaffer came in, he's been top, as well as all of the coaching staff,” Hall said. “The way he's got us playing is amazing and I can speak on behalf of everyone – we're really enjoying playing under him.”

Hall’s future had come into doubt after being dropped by previous boss Eddie Howe towards the end of last season, with the situation becoming more tense by him also being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

However, Jaissle is understood to have held talks with Hall within days of his appointment last month, in which he stressed to the ex-Chelsea star that he was invaluable to the project going forward.

Hall is believed to have been impressed by Jaissle, which has led to a progress in contract talks, and his game has also developed under the German coach, having already matched his total number of assists from last season.

Jaissle’s system has led to Hall having a greater influence down the left-side and he is already producing crosses, passes, touches and chances at a higher rate than under Howe.

Hall’s is already proving to be one of the standout left-backs in the Premier League but his development could now see him considered as world class, particularly if he can sustain his form and fitness over the course of the season.

United were understood to be valuing Hall at around €70 million but Newcastle will now see no reason why their star man would be priced less than the world record fee for a defender, set by Manchester City’s €90m signing of Josko Gvardiol in 2023.

Ultimately, while United may have felt Hall was keen on a move this summer, the player’s interest clearly wasn’t enough to force a transfer and his ambitions will likely be beyond the Red Devils in the future.

With Hall continuing to blossom in an environment where he is trusted and valued, United may not have the resources – footballing or financial – to overcome any rivals for his signature as the youngster grows into one of the best left-backs in the world.
