OFFICIAL: Liverpool announce new signing - and reveal Giorgi Mamardashvili's future

Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans and, in doing so, have revealed their transfer plans for Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Georgia international has failed to supplant Alisson as Liverpool's No.1 since formally joining the club last summer. Although Mamardashvili made 20 appearances last season, they only came due to the Brazilian's repeated injury troubles.

When Alisson is fully fit, Mamardashvili has to play second fiddle. He did not feature in Liverpool's first two games of the season, and this is unlikely to change, at least when it comes to Premier League fixtures.

Mamardashvili showed during his time at Valencia that he can be a very good goalkeeper, so his predicament has attracted the attention of potential suitors, most notably Nottingham Forest.

It has been suggested that Liverpool could let Mamardashvili depart in search of regular football if they can bring in a replacement. Brughmans has now joined, but that doesn't mean that the 25-year-old is heading to Forest.

Brughmans joins, but Mamardashvili stays

The Reds have announced that Brughmans has completed his transfer from Genk, with the deal believed to be worth as much as €35 million. This suggests that Liverpool have big plans for the 18-year-old.

Indeed, the young Belgian appears to have sky-high potential. Despite his age, he has already played 15 senior games between the sticks for Genk, including four this season.

He is already a leader, too. Brughmans captained Belgium at both the U17 European Championship and U17 World Cup in 2025, and he is now skipper of his nation’s U19s squad.

As part of their announcement, Liverpool also essentially confirmed that Mamardashvili is going nowhere - at least not this summer. That's because Brughmans will be loaned back to Genk for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool will therefore not allow Mamardashvili to depart, and he will have to make do with a backup role for the foreseeable future. What will disappoint him the most is that there actually was a chance for him to become the No.1 earlier this summer.

Juventus, in their frantic search for a new goalkeeper, showed a strong interest in Alisson, with the Brazilian believed to be keen to return to Serie A after his previous spell at Roma. However, Liverpool blocked the transfer as they did not want to lose their veteran shot-stopper.
