Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer has reportedly been told that he can leave the club on a permanent deal this summer after two unsuccessful loan spells in the Championship last season.
The 22-year-old, who has 13 first-team appearances for Man Utd under his belt, joined the Red Devils from Brighton & Hove Albion’s academy in 2022, but his four-year spell at Old Trafford is set to end before the summer transfer window closes on 1 September.

Collyer made just 12 appearances for West Bromwich Albion during the first-half of last season, and after being recalled by Man Utd in January, he subsequently joined Hull City, but he once again failed to make an impact. The ex-England U20 international only played five times for the Tigers as they achieved promotion to the Premier League, and his Man Utd career is now close to ending.
That is according to The Sun, who report that Collyer has received the green light to leave Man Utd on a permanent deal before Transfer Deadline Day.
The midfielder was omitted from Man Utd’s matchday squad for their pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and he instead played for the club’s U21 side against Altrincham Town on Friday evening.
It’s understood that academy star Tyler Fletcher has overtaken Collyer in the pecking order at Old Trafford and the 22-year-old, whose contract expires in 2027, is set to be sold on a permanent deal shortly, amid interest from multiple Championship clubs.
Meanwhile, Dan Gore is also expected to be sold by Man Utd, with fellow academy stars Chido Obi and Jacob Devaney likely to be sent on loan.
Bold decision by Michael Carrick
While Collyer is unlikely to have played a meaningful first-team role for Man Utd next season, it’s still a bold call by Michael Carrick given the lack of midfield options currently at Old Trafford.
The club have completed the permanent signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans so far this summer, but Casemiro has departed on a Bosman deal and Manuel Ugarte is set to miss the majority of the season after suffering an ACL injury at the World Cup.
As a result, Santos, Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo are the only senior central midfielders currently at Carrick’s disposal, with Mason Mount also capable of playing a more reserved role and the aforementioned Fletcher potentially set for a prominent role.
Man Utd are hoping to add another new midfielder to their ranks before the window closes, but allowing Collyer to depart could be a mistake if they are unable to finalise the signing of a third midfielder.
