Mykhailo Mudryk is back after nearly two years away from the game, but his journey to Chelsea’s first team is far from over.

The Ukraine international is lacking match sharpness following his enforced two-year hiatus from the professional game following a failed drug test, and Chelsea are keen to pick his route back to full capacity carefully.

Mudryk has not been able to play or even train with a team during his ban, yet there is no shortage of interest in the 25-year-old, with Leeds United already having had a bid rejected.

Simply throwing him to the highest bidder is not something the Blues are willing to do, with the Stamford Bridge outfit instead viewing his return to action as a long-term project.

Chelsea’s Mudryk aims revealed – it’s more than just money

Transfer insider Ben Jacobs has explained the situation to FootballTransfers in conjunction with Betway.

The Elland Road outfit will not guarantee Mudryk the minutes Chelsea want him to receive, and this could mean owners BlueCo taking matters into their own hands by sending him on loan to Strasbourg.

However, the player’s preference appears to be remaining in England.

The transfer expert explains: “Leeds have been in talks over the last week for Mykhailo Mudryk, and they’ve got player buy-in. Mudryk would like to stay in the Premier League, and he sees Leeds United as a good fit.

“Chelsea’s perspective is slightly different. They’ve rejected Leeds’ offer for a loan, and their criteria for deciding where Mudryk goes is not just based on the proposed finances of a deal, things like loan fee or wage coverage, it’s also around minutes for Mudryk, because of his doping ban.

“Even though he’s returned back to the group fit and sharp, he’s not had any match experience, so Chelsea are conscious that the loan has to give them confidence that he’s essentially going to be playing a significant amount of minutes, and that is a little bit harder with Premier League clubs, and Daniel Farke has never been the kind of manager to pre-offer players anything.

“It’s all about how they train and how they perform in matches, which is generally football at large.

“Yet, Chelsea have got one more spot left at Strasbourg that is viewed as either going to Mudryk or potentially Dario Essugo, and were they to send Mudryk to France, there would be a higher likelihood that he would be playing every single week, and then Chelsea could assess Mudryk in a year’s time.”

Mudryk deal heading to the wire as winger holds out for Leeds

Jacobs says Mudryk’s representatives are still hopeful a move to Leeds might be achieved, even if Chelsea are playing down that possibility:

“I sense that Leeds’ interest is still active and ongoing. So Chelsea sources on Monday had told me that Leeds was not a viable option anymore, but the Mudryk camp do not see it that way.

“So it looks like this one might drag on for a few more days as Chelsea see if they can persuade Mudryk to go to Strasbourg, and Mudryk sees whether he can persuade Chelsea to send him to Leeds.

“But either way, my expectation is that Mudryk goes out on loan. It’s expected that there will not be an option to buy, it will be a straight loan, and then when he returns in summer 2027, Chelsea will reassess the situation.”
