EXCLUSIVE: ‘You’ll be a God forever’ – Elliot Anderson told Man Utd move could make him a legend
Elliot Anderson has been told that he could attain ‘God’ status if he moves to Manchester United and leads the Old Trafford club back to the pinnacle of the Premier League.
Anderson, who starred in England’s World Cup victory over Croatia on Wednesday, finds himself at a major crossroads in his career as he prepares to depart Nottingham Forest this summer.
The 23-year-old has been outlined as United’s dream target in a summer midfield overhaul, yet Manchester City are favourites to land the England star and have already launched one bid worth more than €135 million with bonuses included that Forest have already knocked back.
His employers are seeking a Premier League record fee for their star player, who is one of the hottest properties on the market, with the tug-of-war between the two Manchester clubs in full swing.
Anderson could reach ‘God’ status at Man Utd
Jermaine Jenas, who turned out for Nottingham Forest before moving on to Newcastle and Tottenham among others in what was a distinguished career, says that the ‘smart’ move might be to join City, but the greater reward would be the status he could potentially earn at United.
Jenas, who won 21 England caps, explained that he sees Anderson’s situation as being similar to the one Virgil van Dijk found himself in when he had to pick between Liverpool and Manchester City in 2018.
Speaking to FootballTransfers on behalf of 10bet, who offer live roulette as well as sports betting, Jenas was asked which of the Manchester clubs he would advise Anderson to join. He said:
“It feels a little bit like the sensible thing says City, because they are a lot closer to winning titles and winning trophies and doing what City do. With the Champions League, his chances of winning things are better at Manchester City. But I think it falls a little bit in that same sphere as what Virgil van Dijk had to decide when he went to Liverpool over Manchester City.
“Because I think the message was kind of posed to Virgil, which was along the lines of: ‘You can go to Manchester City and you will win four, five, six titles and you'll have a fantastic career, but if you come to Liverpool and you manage to get us our first title in God knows how many years, you'll be a God forever.’
“And I know obviously United's pedigree in the Premier League is rich, but it's just been a long time since they've had any major league success. So if he could go and be a part of that turnaround journey for United, from a career perspective, it would be amazing for him.
“Obviously, Manchester United being a global brand as well would be huge for him.”
City the ‘smart’ move
Jenas did concede, however, that if he were giving Anderson advice as his agent, he would steer towards the blue half of Manchester.
“I suppose if I was his best mate and his agent, I'd be telling him to go to City. I'm trying to find a smart way of looking at it, but the smart career move is to go to City,” he said.
The choice is now Anderson's: the safe move at City or potential immortality at Man Utd?
