Was a supporter really ejected by vegan-friendly Forest Green for eating a bacon roll?
This past weekend, footage emerged on social media of a fan being ejected from Forest Green's comprehensive 5-0 victory against Morecambe on Saturday.
Under owner Dale Vince's stewardship, Forest Green became the world's first vegan football club in 2015, and the New Lawn was installed with numerous eco-friendly innovations.
Rumours circulated that the fan was taken out of the premises for eating a bacon sandwich in the vegan-friendly New Lawn Stadium, but the club has denied those reports from social media troublemakers.
In a statement headline 'baconbuttygate', the club confirmed:
"We are aware of a video circulating online following our game against Morecambe yesterday.
"Contrary to social media opinion and wisdom, the ejection was nothing to do with bacon sarnies more a little 'over-exuberance' on the last day of the season.
"After repeated warnings, the stewards were left with no choice and the gentleman was ejected from the stadium."
Manager Robbie Savage also had to deny the reports, joking on his BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday:
"I've seen that, it's gone viral today. It's fake news. It's fake news, there was no bacon involved. I can 100% categorically confirm there was no bacon sandwich."
Forest Green's vegan kit
In July of 2025, Forest Green unveiled their new vegan kits for the upcoming campaign and the response was polarising.
The fluorescent leopard-style print pattern was said to be "inspired by nature."
To save fans money, the kit will be used for two seasons rather than one and will then be recycled to help combat textile waste.
The pattern is inspired by a barking tree frog and is made from recycled mono-fibre materials which used plant-based dyes, chairman Dale Vince confirmed.
"In pursuit of the most sustainable football kit, we've experimented in previous seasons, with both bamboo and with coffee grounds," he continued.
"This season our new strip pushes the boundary again. I'm really pleased to unveil our bold, bright new kit that's inspired by nature and helping nature - that's pretty fabulous."
