Ghanaian footballer killed by armed robbers who targeted team bus
Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has been killed after armed robbers opened fire on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea following an away match.
Berekum Chelsea were on the road back from a Ghana Premier League game against Samartex in Samreboi, which they lost 1-0.
The club released a statement which said: "On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage. Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover."
In the same statement, the club revealed that Frimpong had been taken to hospital to receive treatment but it was subsequently confirmed that the player had tragically passed away.
The police said they have "deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area", and added that "perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time".
A large-scale manhunt is underway for the attackers.
The Ghana FA announced the news and also paid tribute to Frimpong in a statement.
"The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club," the statement read.
"Dominic Frimpong reportedly lost his life following an armed robbery attack on the team while the club was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture. The incident has sent shockwaves across the entire football fraternity.
"The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time.
This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.
"The GFA is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served.
Furthermore, the GFA will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
"We call on the entire football community to unite in support of Berekum Chelsea and the bereaved family in this moment of grief.
"May the soul of Dominic Frimpong rest in perfect peace."
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time such an incident has happened as concerns continue to be raised about the safety of footballers travelling to and from matches on buses in Ghana.
Over the past few years, FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities and AshantiGold have all suffered similar attacks.
Ghanaian sports journalist Muftawu Abdulai described the mood in the country as one of "shock and disappointment" and insisted: "If the lives of the people or the key architect of the game cannot be protected then it is not worth playing the game."
Frimpong was on loan at Berekum Chelsea from Aduana FC until the end of the season. He was just 20 years old.
