Fabrizio Romano confirms Enzo Fernandez transfer plans: No smoke without fire
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelse a star Enzo Fernandez is seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge, having long discussed the possibility of leaving with the Blues.
Real Madrid and PSG are two of the clubs most keenly associated with the Argentina international star.
Enzo is unhappy with his current contract with the Premier League giants, and if no deal is agreed before the summer, the door will be open to a spectacular transfer.
Enzo Fernandez push for Chelsea exit?
Romano explained on his YouTube channel what happened immediately after Chelsea’s 3-0 loss against PSG on Tuesday: “Enzo Fernandez spoke with ESPN Argentina, and his comments were very interesting, because in that moment a player can easily say it is not the time to talk about his future, that they just suffered an elimination and must focus on the next games, but Enzo did not go in that very closed direction.
“Instead, his answer was quite open about the future, and when he was asked whether he would be at Chelsea next season, after some reports in Argentina, Enzo Fernandez said that now they have eight games left in the Premier League, they have the FA Cup, and then they will see.
“When a player answers in this way, there is usually no smoke without fire, so something is happening behind the scenes, and my understanding is that there have been conversations for some months between Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea to find a solution on improved contract terms and adjust his deal, but at the moment, in mid-March, there is still no agreement on a new contract.
“If the situation continues like this, I am sure both sides will still try to find a solution, but if they cannot, after the answer we heard last night Enzo Fernandez could be open to exploring options in the summer transfer window, so there is a real possibility he would welcome a move in the summer if there is no agreement on a new deal before then, because everything starts from those contract talks.”
Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea: Heading for conflict?
Chelsea have Enzo Fernandez locked to a contract until 2032, so the Blues are in a strong negotiating position with the 25-year-old World Cup winner.
The West London side’s record signing, they are unlikely to let him go without a fight, as Romano explained.
“Do not forget Chelsea's position, Enzo is a very important player for them and they paid more than €110 million to sign him from Benfica in a crazy deadline day negotiation in the January 2024 window, and Enzo Fernandez is under contract until June 2032, so it is a very long deal which keeps Chelsea firmly in control of the situation,” Romano said.
“Chelsea will decide what to do and will decide any price, and you can imagine they will not offer any discounts, so it will not be an easy story, and while an agreement could still keep Enzo at the club, if they cannot find that agreement he could be open to leaving, which was the strong message I felt from that interview, but it also depends on Chelsea and on the fact there are not many clubs in the world who can pay that kind of money.”
Where will Enzo Fernandez move?
Romano has played down the possibility of a deal with PSG, but did hint that Real Madrid is a live prospect.
“Many people are asking about Paris Saint-Germain, but I am not sure PSG want to invest crazy money on a midfielder now because, with all respect to Enzo Fernandez, one of the best in the world, they already have several fantastic midfielders and I do not think that position is the priority, so let us see whether a top Spanish club appears in this story, with Enzo open to that possibility if an agreement with Chelsea can be found,” he said.
Enzo Fernandez has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €82.3m, but Chelsea will want to recoup as much of the €121m they paid Benfica as possible.
