Dowman’s record and Gordon’s blow to Chelsea – how Saturday’s results reshaped the Premier League

Arsenal took a big step towards the Premier League title with a dramatic late win over Everton, while Anthony Gordon’s winner for Newcastle at Stamford Bridge has blow open the Champions League race.

A scoreless draw at Turf Moor has done Burnley’s slim chances of safety no good as Bournemouth end level in their fourth successive Premier League match.

RECORD BREAKERS: Burnley have gone 11 successive matches without a home league win for the first time in the same season. On the positive, they no longer possess the worst home record in the Premier League, with Spurs having only won 10 points.

Sunderland 0-1 Brighton

Brighton claimed three points against Sunderland as Yankuba Minteh scored one of the strangest goals of the Premier League season.

BIZARRE WINNER: Minteh sliced the ball home from a tight angle just before the hour mark to be the decisive factor in the game.

After the game, he admitted: “I wanted to cross the ball but I just saw it go in so I’ll take it. This is the strangest goal I have had since I started but it is a good goal and we take the three points and prepare for more."

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler added to BBC Sport: “It was a strange goal, not one of his nicest in the season but a goal is a goal. He got his rewards. Sometimes football doesn't have to be nice, it has to be effective.”

Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Max Dowman became the youngest scorer in Premier League history as he netted Arsenal’s second in a 2-0 win over Everton at the Emirates, which pushed the Gunners temporarily 10 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the standings.

MAGIC MOMENT: The goal that saw Dowman set a new mark of 16 years and 73 days was a memorable one. Everton pushed everyone – including goalkeeper Jordan Pickford – up for a corner, and when it was cleared the teenager was quickest onto the ball. He shrugged off one opponent, beat a second and then slotted into the empty net.

“It’s a great moment, especially the way the goal was scored. We had 10-15 seconds to enjoy what was about to happen,” Mikel Arteta reflected after the match.

“He doesn’t feel pressure. It’s natural for him.”

Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle

Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge with a tap in after a Danny Welbeck breakaway to give Newcastle just a fourth away win of the season and put a major dent in Chelsea’s Champions League aspirations.

The Blues dominated much of the encounter at Stamford Bridge, but despite 67% of the ball and 22 shots, they were unable to break Newcastle’s resistance. Reece James went closest as his free kick hit the post, while Liam Delap spurned two excellent chances.

Chelsea finish Saturday fifth in the Premier League but can be overtaken by Liverpool on Sunday when they face Tottenham. Meanwhile, Man Utd’s Sunday clash with Aston Villa means that one of these clubs – or potentially both – will distance themselves for the Blues.

VIRAL MOMENT: Referees are used to being at the centre of attention, yet for Paul Tierney, that went a little too far in this encounter.

Before kick-off, the match official was caught in the middle of Chelsea’s pre-match huddle, standing bemusedly and chatting with Blues players as they hyped themselves up for the match.

Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann explained to BBC Sport why the situation came about:

“As it was Newcastle’s kick-off, the referee took control of the ball on the halfway line and was there to prevent any potential issues.

“When it is their kick-off, there is no particular issue. However, when their opponents have to kick off, there is potential for confrontation.”

Keith Halkett, another Premier League official, was less impressed.

On X, he tweeted: "I thought this was AI at work. This incident is not funny. It undermines the authority and integrity of the match official. In his pocket is a yellow card and it should have been out and shown to the Captain. Tierney made to look a fool."
