Barcelona’s crushing Newcastle win is bad news for Marcus Rashford
Barcelona marched impressively through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 7-2 home victory over Newcastle on Wednesday, but Marcus Rashford is likely to have mixed feelings about the nature of his loan side’s victory.
Rashford is in the middle of a season with the Camp Nou side that he wants to make a permanent move.
While Barca have been content with his performances, the financial situation of the club has cast doubt over their ability to sign him on a permanent basis for €30 million.
Barcelona want new Rashford loan
Instead of completing a move for Rashford this summer, The Daily Mail reports that Barcelona are ready to offer Man Utd the possibility of another loan. The driving force behind this approach is their unwillingness to stump up the forward’s transfer fee – despite the fact that it’s obviously a bargain price.
It is claimed, however, that the Red Devils want to sell the England attacker and are “unlikely” to negotiate another temporary move for the 28-year-old.
What’s behind Barcelona’s thinking?
Barcelona don’t want to see Rashford leave - it even be that they are testing United’s resolve over another loan - but it does highlight the precarious nature of their finances and the fact that they have numerous transfer priorities higher up the list than the forward.
A world-class centre-forward is required to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is likely heading to MLS, while the defence also needs to be reshaped.
Rashford, meanwhile, has been proven dispensable for Barcelona since the turn of the year. He has started only five games, two of which were in the Copa del Rey. His role is that of a luxury substitute – something that the Blaugrana cannot necessarily afford.
This was underlined in midweek as Barca ran in seven goals against Newcastle without the England international getting a look in. It was the second match in succession that he failed to get off the bench – and his side have run in an astonishing 12 goals without him.
Newcastle victory raises questions over Rashford
While the 7-2 win over Newcastle was a great night for everyone involved with Barcelona, Rashford was perhaps the exception. The ease with which they ran in three goals in 10 second-half minutes only emphasised his place on the fringes of the squad.
He was partnered on the bench by Sweden international Roony Bardghji, who at 20 years old is undoubtedly the future of Barcelona.
Quite where Rashford sits in the pecking order is becoming less clear by the match.
