How Taylor Swift helped Liverpool become the Premier League's highest-earning club
The Deloitte Football Money League list of the highest-earning football clubs was published this week and for the first time in the club's history, Liverpool were the most successful Premier League side.
For the third year running, Real Madrid topped the list with earnings of €1.16 billion from the 2024/25 season. Los Blancos were the only club in the world with earnings over one billion euros.
Barcelona (2nd) generated €975m, Bayern Munich (3rd) €861m, PSG (4th) €837m and Liverpool (5th) €836m.
Liverpool won the Premier League under Arne Slot last season and although that has aided a major boost in their performance - they jumped from eighth in 2023/24 to fifth in 2024/25 - they have also benefited from an increase in commercial revenue.
That is because Anfield has started hosting concerts from A-list musicians and, in 2024, nobody had a bigger tour than one Taylor Swift.
The Eras Tour ran from March of 2023 to December of 2024 and is officially the highest-grossing music tour of all time.
“Liverpool’s strong performance was driven by on-pitch performance, Champions League revenues and a 7% increase in their commercial revenues," says Deloitte Sport Business Group assistant director Marco D'Elia.
“That is driven by more focus on non-matchday events at Anfield, including concerts by Taylor Swift and corporate events. They also benefited from the challenges of other Premier League clubs, particularly Manchester City and Manchester United.”
Liverpool spent around £200m to increase the capacity of Anfield to just over 60,000 spectators, while vast improvements have been made to the ground itself and the surrounding area. This has helped attract big names like Swift, Bruce Springsteen and Dua Lipa.
"[A total of] 150,000 people came through the turnstiles for Taylor Swift," said Paul Cuttill, Liverpool's vice-president of stadium operations.
"They were younger, maybe their first time at a stadium or in a large crowd, we had to make sure they were welcomed in the right way. The feedback from promoters is the thing that makes Anfield different is the people."
Ben Latty, Liverpool FC’s chief commercial officer, said: “We’re delighted to play our part in boosting the local economy and providing local jobs through the staging of concerts at Anfield.
“Anfield has attracted the biggest stars on the planet, including three nights of Taylor Swift, and we’re very proud of the successes we’ve had so far. We’ve had incredible feedback from concert-goers, promoters and from local residents alike."
Merseyside enjoyed a £31m boost in economy thanks to summer gigs last year, according to a report by Turley Economics, while the events themselves create hundreds of jobs of locals.
“We had roughly 250,000 people that came to those concerts and I think you just have to think about what that does for the city and the local economy.
“It was really apparent that these were people that were coming into the city to stay in the hotels, eat in the restaurants, make use of the local transport links, etc. I just think it's amazing for us to be able to bring those events to the city."
There are nine English clubs in the top 20 highest-earning teams - Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham.
