Chelsea 'expected' to complete major transfer this week
Chelsea are set to allow an academy product to leave before the end of the transfer window, according to The Athletic.
Forward Tyrique George is on his way out, with clubs across Europe battling for his signature.
George has made four appearances in the Premier League and 13 in all competitions this season.
The 19-year-old has scored four goals with one assist in those 13 matches.
He has scored twice in the League Cup — once against Lincoln City and once against Wolves — and he found the back of the net in a 5-1 Champions League victory over Ajax in October.
George also scored in Chelsea’s final Club World Cup group stage match, a 3-0 win over Esperance.
Unnamed clubs battle for George’s signature
Clubs from England, Spain, Portugal, and Germany are reportedly competing to sign George, although no clubs were named in The Athletic’s report.
Late in the summer transfer window, Fulham neared a deal to sign the player, but the transfer broke down and the Cottagers decided to sign Kevin from Shakhtar Donestk instead.
George had also reportedly gotten close to a transfer to AS Roma, but that move also fell through.
Fabrizio Romano reported in August that RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach were also pursuing the player.
George’s shot has him in demand
George’s best attribute is his lethal shot.
He put it on display in November when he scored in a U21 Euro qualification match against Ireland, which the England U21s won 2-0.
The young Englishman found space on the left side of the box and smashed the ball past the goalkeeper with his weaker left foot to seal the 2-0 win. He also won a penalty which led to England’s first goal.
He scored his first Premier League goal last season in Chelsea’s away match against Fulham. The ball fell to him on the edge of the box, and he hit it hard and low to level the score in the 84th minute.
George thrives when cutting in from the left wing onto his right foot, but he can play across the forward line.
Still a raw talent, George has plenty of improvements to make, but the foundations of an effective attacker are visible.
