Celtic sent transfer warning over €10m target
Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda was handed a rare start on Saturday, but Celtic will have mixed feelings about what they saw from him.
The Switzerland international has emerged as a target for the Hoops as he is keen to leave Frankfurt this month. Amenda has struggled for minutes this season and feels that this is jeopardising his World Cup chances.
Prior to Saturday's clash with Hoffenheim, the 22-year-old had only made three starts in the Bundesliga and one in the Champions League for the Eagles, who are having mind-boggling defensive problems.
However, Amenda has not been able to exploit the poor form of the club's other defenders. His sole Champions League start came in a 5-1 loss to Liverpool, and he shipped three against Stuttgart earlier this month.
Of course, he can't be blamed for these losses, but it's fair to say that he has not been a standout performer when he has been on the pitch. This was the case again on Saturday.
A game of two halves
Amenda was handed his fourth start of the Bundesliga season against Hoffenheim, and the early signs from him were encouraging. The Swiss produced a solid first half and was instrumental in Frankfurt's goal.
He won the ball in midfield due to some excellent anticipation and started the counter that resulted in the Eagles opening the scoring. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there.
The second half saw Frankfurt revert to the same side that has been struggling so much recently. After failing to get going in the first half, Hoffenheim took the game to the hosts in the second.
Frankfurt's frail defence was unable to cope with Hoffenheim's pressure and yet again collapsed, conceding three unanswered goals. Amenda was caught woefully out of position on the first goal and did not make much of an effort to get back in time.
He has also been credited with an own goal for Hoffenheim's third strike as he deflected Vladimir Coufal's cross into his own net, but that was very unfortunate.
Amenda completed 94 per cent of his 47 passes, he completed three of his four long balls but only won one of his three ground duels and one of his three aerial duals. It was a mixed bag of a performance.
He showed flashes of promise, but it was ultimately nowhere near enough to suggest that he should be a starter for Frankfurt going forward. It is also a warning to Celtic should they end up completing a deal for him.
Amenda is far from the finished article and the fact that he has played so little football this season means that it could yet take some time to get the best out of him.
