John Terry is auctioning some football memorabilia, including his two most infamous worn kits, to raise money for his foundation.

The Chelsea icon is selling 26 items in total through Goldin Auctions based in New Jersey. The proceeds will go to the John Terry Foundation which supports a number of British charities close to the former player's heart.

There are a number of kits for sale, including three worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry, but the two most notable are from Terry himself.

One is from the 2008 Champions League final in which he missed a penalty in the shootout to allow Manchester United to win in Moscow. The man himself described the kit as "tear-stained".

The second is from a happier time as Terry lifted the 2012 Champions League title with Chelsea. The reason why that one is so infamous is that he was actually suspended for the game but changed into his full kit, including shin pads, in order to lift the trophy as club captain.

The former is expected to fetch £3,750 while the latter is valued at £1,875.

The most valuable item on sale is Terry's Premier League winner's medal from the 2004/05 season. It was the first time that Chelsea had won the top-flight title in 50 years and that could earn the foundation as much as £75,000.

Terry said: “My foundation is going to benefit with two close-to-my-heart charities which desperately need the money, so it is going to a great cause.”

A Goldin Auctions spokesperson said: “When considering the greatest defenders in the history of English football, Terry’s name can often be found at the forefront of the conversation.

“A stalwart and imposing presence on Chelsea’s vaunted back line, Terry quickly was anointed as the club’s skipper under newly arrived manager Jose Mourinho, a decision that proved wise beyond measure.

“We are proud to present a remarkable array of memorabilia sourced directly from John Terry’s personal collection, testaments to various stages of his illustrious and accomplished career.”

The sale takes place on December 31.
