Enzo Fernandez makes 'crazy' Chelsea transfer admission
Real Madrid target Enzo Fernandez has admitted that the player turnover at Chelsea has been 'crazy.'
Despite only joining the Blues in January 2023, the Argentine is one of the more tenured players at Stamford Bridge, such has been the wheeling and dealing of Chelsea since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital takeover in 2022.
Signed for a then-British record €121 million from Benfica after a breakout 2022 World Cup, Fernandez has become one of Chelsea's most important players and a stand-in captain.
Although he endured a slow start to life in West London, with the club in turmoil for his first 18 or so months after his arrival, the 24-year-old is now recognised as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
This hasn't gone unnoticed, and reports in the Spanish press have been frequently linking Fernandez with Real Madrid in recent months. However, Chelsea are adamant that they would only begin to consider a sale if promised a significant profit on their €121m investment, making a move unlikely.
Fernandez makes Chelsea admission
One of the hallmarks of the Boehly era at Chelsea has been the realisation that every player has a price, no matter how important he is to the club. Many a key performer has learned this the hard way in recent seasons.
Although the situation at Chelsea has stabilised under Enzo Maresca, the player-trading model has remained in place. In the summer, 10 fresh faces were brought in, while 17 players departed permanently.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Fernandez has admitted that the transfers of the early Boehly years were 'crazy' and left Chelsea with a bloated squad.
“People spoke a lot about the record transfer fee and everything around it,” Fernandez began, recounting his arrival in 2023. “But I was just focused on myself and improving so that I could show what I can do on the pitch and represent Chelsea at my best.
"I never paid any attention to what people were saying, and I didn’t feel the pressure personally. However, it was a tough time. I was used to winning all the time, and when I came here, the results were very poor.
"When I arrived, there were so many players coming and going. It was a hard period with so many players in the dressing room. We almost didn’t all fit! I think there were 30 of us, or even over 30 players. It was crazy.
“And there were many manager changes before, in the end, Chelsea went for Enzo Maresca. That's when the club started to build more solid foundations as a group. We developed our footballing identity, which has been great for the squad.
“Now you can see how settled we are and what a talented squad we have. We are a really good side, and we all get on well on and off the pitch. For the last 18 months to two years, we’ve had such positive feelings here.”
