Arne Slot reveals after benching Salah: He has a very good future at Liverpool
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has revealed what’s next for Mohamed Salah after the winger was surprisingly dropped from a 2-0 Premier League loss against West Ham United on Sunday.
Salah watched the entire game from the sidelines as goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo gave the Reds victory in what had been billed as a must-win game.
It was the first time in 18 months that Salah had been left out of the starting XI of a Premier League match by Liverpool and naturally has raised questions about his role at Anfield following a disappointing run of form that has seen him score three and create one in his last 10 top-flight games.
Certain pundits have accused Salah of holding back Liverpool and had urged Slot to drop the 33-year-old sooner, yet the Dutchman says that there remains an important role for the icon to play.
“Mo has had an unbelievable career and will have a very good future at this club because he’s such a special player. But when you have four games in 10 days then you have to decide once in a while on a certain lineup,” Slot said.
“The way West Ham set up with a full-back that’s constantly high and a winger who’s inside, I thought this would help the team.”
Slot follows Rooney advice over Salah
Wayne Rooney had previously claimed that Slot’s persistence with Salah is sending the wrong message to Liverpool’s new signings – and it now appears the Liverpool manager has followed his advice.
The former Everton striker told the Wayne Rooney Show: “I'm sure if you're one of them players they've signed, you're sat on the bench and you've seen them not running - I get he's a club legend and everything he's done on the club - but if you're on the bench then what message does that send if you see one of your team-mates not running back and he's starting every game?
“If I was Arne Slot, I'd try and make a big decision just so it has an impact on the rest of the team.”
Isak certainly seemed to benefit from Salah’s absence on Sunday as he bagged his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, and as a result, the Egypt star may have to get a little more used to a place among the substitutes in the immediate future.
