Rangers are interested in SC Freiburg full-back Berkay Yilmaz, according to German media.

The German-born Turkey youth international is currently in his second season on loan at 2. Bundesliga side Nurnberg, where he has consistently managed to impress.

At his parent club Freiburg, though, Yilmaz has become something of a forgotten man because the 20-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance for the Bundesliga outfit.

Freiburg are well-stocked at left-back, with club captain Christian Gunter and the promising Jordy Makengo ahead of Yilmaz in the pecking order. It is therefore likely that the Nurnberg star will be sold in 2026.

According to BILD, Yilmaz is expected to fetch a fee in the region of €5 million, and there is a 'secret clause' in his contract that would allow him to complete a January transfer.

Rangers want Yilmaz, but...

The German outlet reports that several clubs, including Rangers, have taken a liking to Yilmaz and are interested in signing him in 2026. However, the report claims that a January move is out of the question despite his clause.

Yilmaz is loving life at Nurnberg and does not want to jump ship mid-season. The fallen German giants have overcome a difficult start to the season, which left head coach Miroslav Klose fearing for his job, and are now unbeaten in six.

The 20-year-old would be a sensible reinforcement for Rangers, though, as the Ibrox club are severely lacking options in the left-back department. Jayden Meghoma is the only natural option in that position.

Max Aarons, who lost any goodwill he may have had with his baffling red card against Club Brugge, has had to deputise on the left at times. However, with Yilmaz keen to stay in Germany, head coach Danny Rohl will have to get creative in January.
