‘Not conning anybody’ – Gary Neville slams Man Utd star who ‘bugged’ him in Everton defeat
Gary Neville did not hold back in his criticism of one Manchester United star as the Red Devils surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to 10-man Everton.
While the headlines were written by Idrissa Gueye as he was dismissed for tangling with Everton team-mate Michael Keane, the Sky Sports pundit picked out Luke Shaw as a passenger for the Red Devils as they sought to get back on terms in the second half of the match.
David Moyes’ side had taken the lead through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the first half, but midway through the second period, Neville lamented United’s attempts to break down the visiting defence, pinpointing Shaw as a particular issue.
Gary Neville criticises Luke Shaw’s lack of urgency
On co-commentary on Sky Sports, he ranted: “When you’re playing 10 men, you have to have urgency and you have to make the pitch as big as possible. You have to put as many players as possible forward.
“You’ve still got Leny Yoro, Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt largely playing behind the ball.
“Shaw’s started to move forward a little bit but he’s ambling forward, let’s be clear. It’s been bugging me for the last 20 minutes. He’s ambling – look at him!
“He can’t do that. He should be running forward every single time. I don’t care. Yoro I’ve got a little bit more sympathy with because he’s not comfortable on the ball, but Shaw, that’s a waste of time. What he’s doing there’s not conning anybody.”
Defeat leaves Man Utd 10th in the Premier League table on 18 points, now only ahead of Everton on goals scored after the Toffees’ unlikely Old Trafford success.
Next up for Ruben Amorim’s side is a trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday, with the Eagles having lost only twice in the top-flight this season – a record better than every other club aside from Arsenal.
