Chelsea receive the Morgan Rogers update every fan wanted to hear
Chelsea have received a boost in their pursuit of Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, who is understood to be in talks over a new contract.
The 23-year-old has managed to bounce back from a slow start to the season. Aston Villa looked dire in the opening games of the new campaign, but Unai Emery has managed to steady the ship lately.
The Villa Park outfit have won their last four Premier League games, and Rogers' uptick in form has been crucial. Across these four fixtures, the England star notched a goal and two assists.
He is still not at the level he showed last season, but he is getting there. In the summer, Chelsea tried to bring him to Stamford Bridge, as confirmed by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Villa made it clear that he was not for sale, but the speculation surrounding a potential reunion with good friend Cole Palmer, who copied Rogers' 'cold' celebration, has continued unabated.
Rogers extension not as close as thought
However, in recent weeks, Chelsea appeared to have suffered a significant blow in their pursuit of the attacking midfielder as Aston Villa opened talks over a contract extension.
Discussions have been said to be positive, with some going so far as to suggest that an agreement is close. However, football executive Keith Wyness has now claimed that talks are nowhere near as developed as has been reported, which is good news for Chelsea.
“I’m hearing conflicting sides of this," Wyness told Football Insider. "Some are saying that he’s in advanced talks. Some are saying they’re not quite as advanced as they’re being made out to be.
“Look, it would be a big boost if they could tie him down. But, we’ve talked about it many times, Villa have got one eye on PSR and the whole issue around that. So that’ll be part of it. But I think Villa will make every effort to keep him tied down because he’s got real value.
“But as I say, I’m hearing it’s not quite as advanced as the media would make us believe just now. It may be Villa trying to scare off any interest in him by saying that they’re in advanced talks. I think there’s certainly discussions going on, but it’s not yet a done deal.”
