Chelsea make secret Moises Caicedo agreement
Chelsea are ready to reward midfielder Moises Caicedo for his outstanding start to the season with a bumper pay rise made in secret.
The 24-year-old has been one of the best players in the Premier League in the early part of the season, delivering a string of tremendous all-round displays as the Blues have pushed their way to third in the standings.
Caicedo signed an eight-year deal when he joined the Stamford Bridge side from Brighton in 2023 for €116 million, with the club holding an option for one further season. He now stands in line to be rewarded for his excellent displays.
Sky Sports News' chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol reports: “There’s been talk that he may be getting a new Chelsea contract to reward him for his performances. My understanding is that his contract already, Chelsea have him tied down to 2032. He won’t be getting a new contract, but what is going to happen behind the scenes in private is that the terms of his present deal are going to be improved.”
Alan Pardew, former manager of Newcastle United and West Ham, argued: “That’s a new contract then!”
Solhekol replied: “It won’t be a new contract; it’ll be a pay rise. He won’t be signing a new deal with new terms, it’ll just be Chelsea recognising the fact that he’s been playing so well that they’ll give him a pay rise, and they’re not going to announce it, it’s not going to be done in public.
“Chelsea do have these contracts that are heavily incentivised. So players are on relatively low base wages compared to other clubs their size. But it you play well, then you’re rewarded. Chelsea’s position is: ‘Of course he’s playing fantastically well, and we’ve got a great relationship between him and his representatives, so we’re going to reward him but we don’t want the whole song and dance of announcing that we’re giving him a new contract.’”
Enzo Maresca bills Moises Caicedo as the ‘best in the world’
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is certainly appreciative of Caicedo’s performances this season.
Speaking after the Blues beat Tottenham 1-0, Maresca said: “Moi, I think he's showing how good he is. He's top.
“I said many times, the best thing from Moi, for sure, we judge him inside the pitch, but he's so humble, he's such a good guy, he's always there to help everyone.
“And I just said to the television interviewer that for me, him and Manchester City's Rodri, in this moment, they are the two best defensive midfielders in the world.”
