Manchester United’s form may have improved in recent weeks but an alarming stat proves that Ruben Amorim still has a lot of work to do to get consistent results from his side.

United have gone five games unbeaten for the first time since Amorim’s appointment one year ago, marking a stark change from their early season form which saw just two wins in their first seven matches across all competitions.

A last-minute equaliser from Matthijs de Ligt saved United from a loss against Tottenham on Saturday despite Amorim’s men being ahead at half-time.

It was the second game in a row that United were winning at the break before going behind and eventually securing a draw and, while Amorim will be happy with his side’s resilience, there will be more frustration towards losing another first half lead.

The situation becomes more concerning when looking in the context of United’s season, with the Red Devils being top of the table at half time but 18th when looking at the second halves of matches in isolation.

Evidently United are still struggling to assert themselves over the course of 90 minutes and Amorim will need to get to the bottom of just why his side are championship contenders in the first halves but relegation battlers after the break.

The numbers behind Man Utd’s polarising performances

United would have 22 points from their 11 games if they ended at half time but they have secured just six points in the opposite case, failing to ‘win’ in any of their second halves this season.

Indeed, only three teams have dropped more points from winning positions than United this season and the problem could be as much about the mentality of players as it is tactically, although Amorim will share some responsibility for the contrast in results.

Amorim’s intense style of play perhaps takes its toll on the team over the match, with teams seemingly banking on United losing steam later in the game even if they have a lead.

However, Amorim has made 48 substitutions in the Premier League this season yet United have seen just one goal from those subs – the joint lowest of any current manager in the division.

Amorim will perhaps feel as though he does not have the adequate strength in depth to maintain consistent standards at every minute of every match but the difference in levels is too strong to ignore and United will need to adapt to ensure they build on their growing momentum in recent weeks.
