Man Utd boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe announces decision on Ruben Amorim's future
INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has announced that Manchester United will not make a 'knee-jerk' decision over Ruben Amorim and even voiced his belief that he should be given three years to prove his worth.
The Portuguese is coming up on his one-year anniversary in the Old Trafford dugout, having been appointed as Erik ten Hag's successor on 11 November 2024.
To say that it has been a rough start to life for Amorim at Man Utd would be an understatement. He has lost 21 of his 50 matches in charge, drawing nine and winning 20.
Despite spending more than €250 million on summer recruits, the Red Devils have only won three of their opening seven Premier League outings this term, while also crashing out to League Two side Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.
Amorim was thought to be at risk of the sack had Man Utd lost to Sunderland at the weekend, but the pressure has been eased slightly following a 2-0 win.
Ratcliffe won't sack Amorim
Man Utd supremo Sir Jim Ratcliffe has now spoken about Amorim on The Times' Business podcast and revealed that he continues to back the 40-year-old, even suggesting that the coach needs two more years before he can be truly judged.
"He has not had the best of seasons," Ratcliffe began. "Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be. The press, sometimes I don't understand. They want overnight success. They think it's a light switch.
"You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow. You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."
Ratcliffe also categorically ruled out that the Glazers, Man Utd's controversial majority owners, could request that Amorim be sacked, saying: "It's not going to happen. We're local and they're the other side of the pond.
"That's a long way away to try and manage a football club as big as complex as Manchester United. We're here with feet on the ground. They get a bad rap, but they are really nice people and they are really passionate about the club."
