Man Utd set for major transfer windfall after Barcelona scouting mission
Manchester United could land a huge financial bonus after Barcelona were left impressed with Mason Greenwood and are now considering a move for the Marseille attacker.
Although Greenwood left Man Utd after he was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour – accusations that were subsequently dropped – the Red Devils retained a huge sell-on fee as part of the deal that took him to France.
Marseille paid around €26 million (£22.7m) for the 24-year-old attacker, but United retain a 50% stake in any fee the Ligue 1 club makes in selling him on.
And OM head coach Roberto De Zerbi may be able to do just that as Barcelona have taken a serious interest in the player, The Sun reports.
Barca are said to have been left impressed after watching Greenwood score four in a Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre. The hitman has seven goals in nine league appearances this season, while he has also scored in goal in three Champions League outings.
The Blaugrana, meanwhile, have been tracking the once-capped England striker since his time on loan with Getafe, where he scored 10 times in a single season in Spain.
It’s unclear what sort of asking price Marseille will put on Greenwood, who is under contract until 2029, but he has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €43m (£37.52m).
Man Utd, therefore, stand to receive at least €20m (£27.45m) when the forward is eventually sold.
Potential Rashford reunion
Greenwood could have an unlikely reunion with Marcus Rashford at Barcelona, with the latter enjoying a terrific loan spell at the Catalan side.
Having been frozen out at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, Rashford has been going from strength to strength in Spain, even delivering an assist for Fermin Lopez’s goal in El Clasico as his side slipped to a 2-1 loss.
Barca have a purchase clause worth just €30m (£26.18m) in the winger’s contract and appear increasingly likely to trigger it.
With Greenwood in their viewfinder, Hansi Flick’s side are, therefore, targeting two former Man Utd strikers at a bargain price.
