Gareth Southgate heads three-man shortlist to replace Ruben Amorim at Man Utd
Former England manager Gareth Southgate is the favourite to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, should the club reluctantly sack him.
The current United boss has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford since taking over from Erik ten Hag, leading the club to their worst ever Premier League finish in 2024/25.
Still, with a full pre-season and a full summer transfer window under his belt, there was a renewed optimism around the club ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, especially after the forward line was revamped with the costly acquisitions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
However, the same frailties have been on display this season as United have won two, drawn one and lost three of their opening six league matches.
On Saturday, they were defeated 3-1 away at Brentford.
The lowest point so far this season came in the League Cup when they were eliminated by League Two Grimsby.
The pressure on Amorim is high and although Man Utd owners INEOS are reluctant to sack him so early in the season, immediate improvements will be required.
After the loss against Brentford, the Portuguese insisted that he is not wasting his energy worrying about losing his job.
“I'm not concerned - it is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I'm here. I am never concerned about losing my job. I am not that kind of guy,” he announced to the media.
Who could replace Ruben Amorim?
Should Sir Jim Ratcliffe pull the trigger, he wants Southgate in as the next Man Utd manager, according to TalkSPORT.
The former coach of The Three Lions has long been linked with the United job, even when Ten Hag was in charge.
Two other names are in the frame - Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace and Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth.
Glasner has been extremely impressive as Palace boss and the Eagles are actually second in the Premier League table currently.
