Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is edging closer to a departure from Old Trafford.

The Denmark international joined the Red Devils for an initial fee of $86 million in the summer of 2023 but has endured a nightmare spell at the club, to the point where he is no longer considered a key member of the squad.

Hojlund made 52 appearances for Man Utd in 2024/25 and scored just 10 goals. Six of those came in the Europa League, while he found the back of the net just four times in the Premier League.

Those numbers forced the hand of manager Ruben Amorim, who sanctioned the arrivals of three new attackers in the summer - Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and a direct competitor for Hojlund, Benjamin Sesko.

Hojlund did not make it off the bench in the first game of the season last weekend, a 1-0 loss versus Arsenal.

He joined Man Utd from Atalanta and has been strongly linked with a return to Serie A, with Milan and Napoli said to be interested.

At the moment, the player is reportedly not keen on a move to Milan due to the presence of United States star Christian Pulisic.

As we head into the new Serie A season, Milan have been deploying a 3-5-2 formation with Rafael Leao and Pulisic leading the line, with Santiago Gimenez also competing for minutes.

Hojlund wants to be a key player for any new club, and he allegedly doesn't believe he will have that status at Milan due to the untouchable Leao and the presence of Pulisic.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, this has played a key role in the 22-year-old deciding his next move.

“Rasmus was perhaps worried he wouldn’t be able to make his mark, especially if a deal was not permanent,” Gazzetta states.

Now Napoli are leading the race for his signature, with Hojlund keen to link up with Antonio Conte.

$35m agreement pushes Hojlund to Naples

With Hojlund seemingly heading for Napoli, Milan have elected to reinforce their offensive sector with an alternative.

Victor Boniface has agreed to move to the Rossoneri on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, with the Serie A side commanding a $35 million option to buy next summer, according to Sky Sport Deutschland.

There are still some details in the deal to be ironed out, but it appears that the Nigeria international is destined for Milan.

Hojlund, therefore, is getting closer to Napoli. Man Utd are set to agree a one-year loan, while there will be an option to buy that has not yet been agreed.
