OFFICIAL: AC Milan sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku
Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku has completed a permanent move to AC Milan.
The Frenchman's unhappy two years at Stamford Bridge have come to an end. Nkunku joined the Blues in a $70 million deal in 2023 as one of the Bundesliga's most exciting attackers, but he failed to establish himself as a regular starter.
His first season was disrupted by injuries, while his second saw him primarily feature for Enzo Maresca's Conference League 'B Team.' Nkunku scored prolifically against lesser opposition, but his lack of action in high-profile games proved a constant source of frustration.
Nkunku already wanted out in January, and Bayern Munich agreed personal terms with him. However, Chelsea's $81 asking price doomed the move. The Germans returned for the 27-year-old this summer but were only able to offer a loan, which the Blues rejected.
This has allowed AC Milan to swoop in and agree a permanent transfer for the France international after deals to sign Rasmus Hojlund and Victor Boniface collapsed.
AC Milan sign Nkunku
The Rossoneri have agreed to pay Chelsea a $49m transfer fee, comprised of a fixed sum north of €35m and additional bonuses on top. The Serie A giants have now officially confirmed the transfer.
Nkunku has signed a long-term contract at the San Siro until 2030. He joins Milan after scoring 18 goals in 62 appearances for Chelsea, and is set to lead the line with Santiago Gimenez.
The versatile forward has become Milan's joint-second most expensive signing ever. Leonardo Bonucci also cost the Rossoneri $48m in 2017, while Rafael Leao still occupies top spot with a price of $57m in 2019.
Nkunku has become the latest departure in a long list of Chelsea exits this summer, which have fetched the West London club more than $373m as they seek to end the window with a positive balance to be able to register new players for the Champions League.
