LAFC to seal Son Heung-min transfer coup after Thomas Muller surprise
LAFC are closing in on the signing of Tottenham captain Son Heung-min after reportedly being snubbed by Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller.
The Major League Soccer franchise are keen to add a marquee signing to their line-up after Olivier Giroud's surprising return to Ligue 1. The Frenchman has joined Lille and has left behind a sizeable hole that needs to be filled.
Giroud didn't quite have the impact that LAFC had hoped for, so they are keen to get it right with their next signing as they look for someone to complement the brilliant Denis Bouanga.
LAFC had initially hoped to replace the 2018 World Cup winner with a 2014 World Cup winner in the shape of former Bayern superstar Thomas Muller. However, on Sunday, reports emerged that the German had unexpectedly turned down a move to Los Angeles.
Despite Bayern pushing for Muller to join their American affiliate club, the forward has decided that he prefers a move to Canada, where he looks set to link up with compatriot Axel Schuster, who is the CEO and sporting director of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
LAFC advance in Son talks
This has forced LAFC to focus all of their attention on Son Heung-min. Spurs have exercised their one-year option in their captain's contract, but the South Korean looks increasingly likely to leave the club anyway.
Son is coming off a disappointing personal season, although he did end it on a high by lifting the Europa League trophy. According to GIVEMESPORT, he is now close to agreeing terms with LAFC and is favouring a move to the US over Saudi Arabia.
This would be a major coup for LAFC, but the deal is not expected to be finalised until later in the window. A truly definitive decision on Son's future hasn't been made, and he could yet opt to remain at Spurs, who are happy to keep him but also wouldn't stand in his way if he were to pursue a move away.
Son is currently on an Asian pre-season tour with Tottenham, where he is contractually obliged to play against Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday. He will hold talks with Thomas Frank afterwards and then make his decision.
