Manchester United’s players remain “unconvinced” by the performances of striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Recruited from Atalanta last summer for €74 million, Hojlund initially struggled to make his mark in the Premier League but hit a purple patch of form that seemed to suggest he would come good.

However, the 21-year-old has regressed again, scoring one goal in 10 appearances since an injury, and the Manchester Evening News reports that there are players who are reticent to pass to the Denmark international because they do not trust his ability.

The MEN states: “A United squad member told a confidant that certain players are seeking alternative solutions in the final third due to Hojlund's lean spell in front of goal. United have scored one goal in their past three games.”

The report adds: “Hojlund was denied a goal on his full debut against Brighton in September after the Video Assistant Referee found that Marcus Rashford had dribbled the ball out of play.

“Rashford and Hojlund have bickered a number of times this season over the winger's failure to service the striker.”

Hojlund seemed to admit to the difficulties that he is currently facing when he posted on Instagram on Monday following the previous day’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal: “Tough times at the moment. But we will grow from this.”

Hojlund the only option

The Dane has suffered from a lack of relief during this lean spell for him. United do not have another obvious option for the centre-forward role, with Anthony Martial the only other natural player for that position presently out injured.

As such, he has remained in the firing line throughout this tricky period.

United are being linked with a number of centre-forwards for the summer transfer window, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko the latest player rumoured to be of interest to the Old Trafford club.

These whispers have only been fuelled by Sesko’s agent watching the weekend’s fixture against Arsenal.
