Mykhailo Mudryk sent a touching message to Kieran Trippier after the Newcastle defender suffered a nightmare few moments to allow Chelsea to come from behind and beat their Premier League rivals in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Eddie Howe’s side were leading the match heading into stoppage time at the end of the match thanks to Callum Wilson’s early strike, yet a weak header from Trippier in his penalty box allowed Mudryk to level.

Worse was to follow for the England right-back as he subsequently slammed his penalty wide in the shootout that transpired, with the Blues hitting a perfect four from four to win 4-2.

Mudryk converted Chelsea’s last penalty in this sequence in what was a rare positive night for him since a €70 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk last January.

Indeed, the 22-year-old, who is under contract until 2031, has been through the mill at Chelsea as he has struggled to live up to his huge transfer fee. His strike against Newcastle was just his third goal for the Blues in 34 appearances, while he only has four assists to his credit.

The Ukraine international is, therefore, someone who knows about going through hard times and he sent a message to Trippier, whose form has deserted him as Newcastle have struggled in recent weeks, via Instagram.

What did Mudryk say to Trippier?

“Kieran, just wanna say to you, stay strong, something the s*** is happens but I think you are a strong footballer no matter what,” Mudryk posted to his 2.2 million followers on Instagram stories, tagging Trippier in the image.

Mudryk, meanwhile, will hope to build from what was a positive evening for him.

With fixtures set to arrive thick and fast over the festive period, he has the opportunity to gain positive momentum for the first time in his Chelsea career, especially as the Blues have a series of winnable matches against Wolves, Crystal Palace and Luton Town in the Premier League, then a home FA Cup tie against Preston to kick off 2024.
