Gareth Southgate has announced his latest England squad and one of the more high profile players to miss out is Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho.

In preparation for the 2022 World Cup, England have two upcoming friendlies matches to navigate against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.

Sancho's omission is a surprising one as he is probably in the best form of the season since his big-money move from Manchester United in the summer.

In the first six month of the campaign, Sancho struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, but since the turn of the year he has generally recognised for being one of the club's more positive performers in a poor run.

Strangely, Southgate included Sancho in previous England squads when he was struggling at Man Utd, though has left him out despite his increasingly impressive performers.

Southgate explained his choice by saying there were other players ahead of Sancho in the England pecking order currently.

"Because the other attacking players in the squad are slightly ahead of him at the moment in our feeling," he said after the squad announcement.

"You can see the names there: Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Jack Grealish, if you look at the seasons they've had."

Sancho's team-mate Marcus Rashford also missed out on the squad.
