Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has revealed that Edinson Cavani recently pledged his immediate future to the club.

Cavani signed an extended contract at Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, but has since fell down the pecking order at the club following the surprise return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Though he has featured more in recent matches, he only has four starts and eight overall appearances in the Premier League under his belt this campaign.

His lack of minutes led to speculation that he could leave in the January transfer window, with Barcelona and Boca Juniors mentioned as potential destinations.

The Blaugrana have already signed Ferran Torres this month but are desperate for further reinforcements in the final third, with Xavi looking to add new number nine to his squad.

As for Boca, Cavani was strongly linked with the Argentine giants last summer as it his desire to return to South America to play before he retires in order to be closer to his family in Uruguay.

Rangnick has started to play with a two-man strikeforce in order to get the best out of Ronaldo and many view Cavani as the ideal partner for the Portuguese superstar due to his pressing and workrate up top.

What did Rangnick say?

Rangnick insisted to the media that he wanted Cavani to stay at Man Utd and revealed details of a conversation with the player in which he indicated a desire to remain until at least the end of the season.

"I told him that if it was up to me I would want him to stay and I had a conversation with him yesterday," the German told reporters.

"He came into my office and we spoke for almost half an hour and he told me he will definitely stay and would want to stay until the end of the season.

“Not only because I told him that he should stay or has to stay, he did it on his own behalf and he told me that I can rely on him to stay until the end of the season and give his very best and be a role model for the young players.

“Even if he's not playing, he will be trying to be the best possible role model for the other players and for me this is good news because Edi if one of those players with his vast amount of experience, with his mentality, his work ethic, I think he could really be a perfect role model for the other players.”
