Last summer saw the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Premier League and Jack Grealish move to Manchester City for €117.5 million.

But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has picked a goalkeeper as the league's signing of the season so far.

Aaron Ramsdale moved to Arsenal from Sheffield United in a deal worth €28m last summer.

And at the time, the transfer was widely questioned, after Ramsdale had suffered back-to-back relegations with the Blades and Bournemouth.

But Ramsdale has been a revelation between the sticks for the Gunners and has played a vital part in their surge up the league table to compete for a Champions League place.

Carragher believes Ramsdale has proven a lot of doubters wrong and is now one of the first names on Mikel Arteta's team sheet.

What did Carragher say about Ramsdale?

He told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I went for Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise to me.

“When they brought him in I thought they were bringing him in as back up and because he was an English player for the quota.

“He hadn’t impressed me in his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth."

Carragher has now been impressed with the 23-year-old's personality and credits him with helping Arsenal both on and off the pitch.

“It’s not just the saves he’s made," Carragher continued.

"He’s a personality, he’s a character. Already, to go into that dressing room - yes, there’s young players in there but it’s still a huge club, going into Arsenal as a young lad, a young goalkeeper.

“He’s got a presence about him that I didn’t see that he had and he’s had a big impact on the team."

England and Arsenal

Ramsdale made his senior England debut in November in a 10-0 win over minnows San Marino.

And, he pulled off one of the saves of the season so far when he clawed a goal-bound James Maddison free-kick on to the bar against Leicester earlier this year.

Arsenal have recovered from a poor start to the campaign to sit four points ahead of West Ham in fourth place.
