Roma have made football history this week.

Following the acquisition of Rodrigo Mora for €25 million from Porto, the Portuguese winger opted to select the number 86 shirt.

With that choice, the Giallorossi became the first side in football history to have had all squad numbers, 1-99, represented by at least one player since the club was established in 1927.

Serie A is relatively relaxed about squad numbers compared with several other major European leagues. Italian clubs can generally assign players numbers from 1 to 99, with relatively few restrictions. This is why it is common in Serie A to see players wearing high numbers.

The Premier League also allows numbers up to 99, but its rules are more restrictive in practice because squad numbers are generally allocated consecutively. In Germany, the Bundesliga has traditionally had a more limited range for first-team players, while La Liga has historically imposed considerably tighter restrictions on squad numbering.

One of the more famous shirt number quirks in Italian football saw Inter striker Ivan Zamorano have the number 18 on the back but with a small plus sign in between the one and the eight. That's because he was always a number nine, but Ronaldo took the nine jersey at that time following his arrival from Barcelona.

The top and bottom spots for Roma have both been taken by goalkeepers. Wojciech Szczesny is among a few stoppers who took the number one jersey, while Mile Svilar previously took the number 99.

Francesco Totti is famed for being Roma's number 10 for his entire career and although the club has not officially retired that squad number, nobody has worn it since the Italian superstar retired.
