Romelu Lukaku made a loan return to Inter in the summer transfer window but it hasn’t gone to plan as he has suffered with fitness issues in recent weeks.

The Belgian left Inter for Chelsea in the summer of 2021 but after a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge, he went back to the San Siro in a loan move in a bid to revive his career.

There was plenty of optimism around his return and fans even forgave the manner of his departure, but he hasn’t played for the Nerazzuri since the end of August.

Now, there are concerns from Inter over his fitness and physical condition as they look to get the forward back to his best form for the rest of the season.

Lukaku's fitness a concern

When Lukaku first suffered injury problems this season, he returned to Belgium to continue his treatment in his homeland, something that didn’t go down well with those at Inter.

The Italian club felt they could no longer monitor his progress, which has since deteriorated further, and he has faced further problems with his leg flexors.

Inter have done well in the period without Lukaku, as evident by their recent performances against Barcelona, which has put them on the verge of progression to the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Inter have used forward such as Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko in his place, with Lukaku having missed 10 matches so far this season across the Champions League and Serie A.

When he returned, there was an expectation that Inter would ensure Lukaku would stay at the club on a permanent basis, and that feeling was intensified by the start he made at the club.

However, matters have changed in recent times, and it would be hard to justify making the move permanent if Lukaku continues with injury troubles, especially considering he is one of the club’s top earners.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Inter staff and coach Inzaghi are very surprised by Lukaku's collapse in condition, and talks of a permanent move have halted in recent days.
