Celtic stunned as O'Neill favourite tipped to join Man Utd
Celtic star Benjamin Nygren has been tipped to complete a blockbuster move to Manchester United following an excellent debut season in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old, who arrived at Celtic Park from Nordsjaelland for a fee of €1.5 million in July, has scored 19 goals and provided seven assists in 47 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and he has established himself as an integral player under interim boss Martin O’Neill.
Nygren has been a rare bright spark in a fairly underwhelming campaign for the Hoops and several Premier League clubs have been linked with pursuing a deal during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Rumours have hinted that Nygren is poised to earn a move to the English top flight this summer and former Arsenal star Anders Limpar believes that his compatriot would be a huge success at Man Utd if the Red Devils opt to finalise a surprise transfer.
“He is a prospect and he's going to get better,” Limpar admitted when asked about Nygren (via The Scotsman).
“Imagine him playing for a top Premier League side. I'm not saying that Celtic are not top side but they are in Scotland. Nygren could play for Manchester United and he’d probably score 20 goals a season in the Premier League. He's that good.”
Limpar added: “He is another player I wish to see stay a couple of seasons at Celtic, to settle in and then go.”
Verdict: Benjamin Nygren unlikely to join Man Utd
However, while Limpar believes that Nygren would be a hit at Man Utd, a move to Old Trafford remains improbable.
Michael Carrick’s side are expected to bolster their options on the left flank and in central midfield this summer, but Nygren, who has played in a multitude of positions for Celtic, is unlikely to be the answer.
Instead, the Red Devils are aiming to finalise a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson or Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, while their list of left winger targets includes Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig) and Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United).
