Rangers learn Hibs’ huge Kieron Bowie asking price – but is he really worth it?
Rangers have been quoted a huge fee to sign Hibernian striker Kieron Bowie in January, but doubts remain over whether the Scotland international is truly worth the price being demanded.
Hibs are understood to be holding out for a club-record fee for the 23-year-old, placing an immediate question mark over Rangers’ willingness to push the deal forward this month.
Kieron Bowie to Rangers: The background
Rangers’ ambitions to strengthen Danny Rohl’s squad in the January transfer window have seen the Gers turn towards Hibernian striker Kieron Bowie, but the Edinburgh club’s valuation has complicated early discussions.
While Rohl has been able to instigate an impressive turnaround in the Ibrox side’s fortunes since the sacking of Russell Martin, one aspect that has been lacking in the Light Blues’ play has been a lack of cutting edge up front.
Youssef Chermiti may have netted twice against Celtic, but he has served only to disappoint since a big-money summer move from Everton, while Bojan Miovski has fared little better. Danilo, meanwhile, appears to have dropped out of the picture of late.
Hibs are not willing to part with Scotland striker Bowie without a fight. According to The Herald, they expect to receive a fee around £6.5 million (€7.5m) for the former Fulham youth, who has scored seven Premiership goals this season.
Hibs react to Bowie rumours
While Bowie is open to a move, instructing his agents to keep him abreast of the situation, Hibees manager David Gray shrugged off any thoughts of a sale in his latest press conference.
“I think naturally, again with the window being open, that's speculation that will always be there," the boss said of the 23-year-old.
“It's a sign of the football club doing well, it's a sign that your players are playing well, your teammates, that it helps you get into these positions.
“And for any player that gets speculation around them, there's nothing you can do about that. It means you're doing something right.
“I think that's something that's great to have, as long as you remember why that's come. It's come because you're playing well, you're working hard, you're part of a successful team.”
Doubts over transfer fee
Naturally, the fee associated with Bowie has raised eyebrows. If Hibs were to sell Bowie for the quoted fee, it would smash their transfer record, which is the deal that took Scott Brown to Celtic in 2007 for an estimated £4.4m (€6.7m)
The likes of John McGinn and Josh Doig have also left Easter Road for significantly smaller transfer fees.
According to FootballTransfers’ algorithm, Bowie’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at £1.2m or €1.4m. This is clearly well below the price that Hibs are seeking.
Should Rangers meet Hibs’ demands?
Rangers are victims of their circumstances with regard Bowie. Hibs can ask for a large fee safe in the knowledge that the Gers need to sign a centre-forward.
The Glasgow giants would be well advised to consider the former Raith Rovers hitman, too. According to data analytics firm SciSports, he is a better striker than both Miovski and Chermiti at present, while in the long term he has the potential to be better than any player in the current Rangers squad.
Given the Ibrox club paid around £7.5m for Chermiti last summer, signing a better player for less does not seem such a bad deal.
Ultimately, Hibs have little incentive to sell at this point of the season as they continue to chase European football next term, so if Rangers are to prise away their star man in the form of Bowie, it’s inevitable they will have to pay a premium for him. Now it’s a case of whether they believe he is worth it.
